Helping adults over 50 stay strong, mobile, and independent

Welcome!

Happy Friday!

I hope you've had a wonderful week and have found a little time to move your body. Whether you've been walking, lifting weights, gardening, or simply taking the stairs a little more often, every bit of movement is an investment in your future health.

This week we're tackling two questions I hear all the time in the office:

"Am I making mistakes with my exercise?" and "How do I know if what I'm doing is actually working?"

The truth is, many adults over 50 work hard but unknowingly make a few common mistakes that slow their progress. The good news? Most of these are easy to fix once you recognize them.

We'll also talk about the signs that your exercise program is paying off—and they're not always what the scale tells you. Feeling stronger, climbing stairs more easily, improving your balance, recovering faster, and simply having more energy are often the first signs that your body is getting healthier.

My goal is to help you exercise smarter, not just harder, so you can stay independent, active, and healthy for years to come.

If you enjoy this newsletter, I'd like to ask a small favor. Please forward it to a friend, spouse, sibling, or neighbor who could benefit from trustworthy, evidence-based health information. Word of mouth has been the biggest reason our Exercise Doc family continues to grow, and your recommendation could help someone live a longer, stronger, healthier life.

As always, thank you for allowing me to be part of your health journey. I truly appreciate your support and look forward to seeing you again next week.

Have a wonderful weekend—and keep moving!

How to Know if Your Exercise Program Is Really Working

How do you know if your workouts are actually making a difference? The answer isn't just the number on the scale. Discover the 10 signs your exercise program is improving your strength, mobility, balance, and overall health—even if you haven't lost a pound.

Quick Health Wins

✓ Strength beats the scale. If you're getting stronger, you're getting healthier—even if your weight hasn't changed.

✓ Recovery matters. Muscles become stronger while you recover, not while you're exercising. Aim for 7–9 hours of sleep and allow time between hard workouts.

✓ Don't skip the warm-up. Five minutes of easy movement before exercising can improve performance and reduce your risk of injury.

✓ Add a little challenge. If your workout feels exactly the same as it did three months ago, your body has probably adapted. Gradually increase the weight, repetitions, distance, or pace to keep making progress.

✓ Consistency wins every time. A moderate exercise routine you can stick with all year is far more effective than an intense program that lasts only a few weeks.

  • 🧠 Try This This Weekend

  • This weekend, take just five minutes to evaluate your exercise program by asking yourself these questions:

    • Am I a little stronger than I was a month ago?

    • Can I walk farther or climb stairs with less effort?

    • Is my balance improving?

    • Do I recover more quickly after activity?

    • Do I have more energy during the day?

If you answered "yes" to even a couple of these questions, congratulations—your exercise program is working!

If not, don't get discouraged. Small adjustments, like adding a strength training session, increasing your walking pace, or improving your consistency, can make a remarkable difference over the next few months.

Remember, healthy aging isn't about being perfect. It's about making small, sustainable improvements that add up over time. Keep showing up, keep moving, and let your body reward you for your efforts.
