Helping adults over 50 stay strong, mobile, and independent

Good morning and welcome to this special Memorial Day edition of the newsletter.

First and most importantly, I want to wish you and your family a safe, peaceful, and meaningful Memorial Day. Today we remember and honor the men and women who gave their lives in service to our country. Their sacrifice is something we should never take for granted.

As we gather with family, fire up the grill, or maybe just enjoy a slower morning with a cup of coffee, it’s also a good reminder that our health matters too. Staying active, independent, and pain-free helps us continue enjoying these moments with the people we love.

This week we’re focusing on arthritis — what it really is, why it happens, and some practical ways to help prevent it or slow it down over time. Arthritis affects millions of adults over 50, but many people are surprised to learn there are simple daily habits that can make a real difference for joint health.

We’re also taking a closer look at NSAIDs — common pain medicines like ibuprofen and naproxen. While these medications can help with pain, they also carry risks that many people are unaware of, especially as we get older. Knowing when to use them, when to be cautious, and what safer options may exist is incredibly important.

And as always, my goal is to give you information that is practical, understandable, and actually useful in real life — not just medical jargon that belongs in a textbook nobody wants to read anyway.

Thank you again for being part of this community. I truly appreciate you spending part of your week here with me.

Now grab your coffee, maybe avoid challenging your uncle to backyard football this year, and let’s get into this week’s newsletter.Doc Mike

Arthritis, What is it and How Do We Prevent It?

Many adults assume aching joints are simply part of getting older. A little stiffness in the knees, sore fingers in the morning, or pain getting out of a chair may seem like something everyone eventually experiences. But for millions of people, these symptoms are caused by arthritis.

Arthritis is one of the most common health problems in adults over 50. It can affect mobility, independence, sleep, mood, and overall quality of life. The good news is that understanding arthritis early may help slow its progression and improve daily function.

The Hidden Dangers of NSAIDs

Arthritis pain can make everyday life difficult. Aching knees, stiff fingers, sore hips, and painful joints often lead many adults over 50 to reach for over-the-counter pain relievers. One of the most common choices is a group of medications called NSAIDs, or nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs.

These medications can help reduce pain and inflammation, but many people do not realize they also carry important risks, especially when used long term. At the same time, some natural supplements may offer additional relief for certain people with arthritis.

Quick Health Wins

Extra weight adds stress to joints. Even modest weight loss can help reduce knee and hip pain.

• Strong muscles help protect arthritic joints. Simple exercises like chair stands and walking can make a big difference.

• Movement helps nourish cartilage. Long periods of sitting may worsen stiffness and discomfort.

• NSAIDs like ibuprofen and naproxen can irritate the stomach and raise blood pressure when used too often.

• Drinking enough water may help support joint health and reduce muscle cramps.

• Heat before activity and ice after activity can help many people manage arthritis pain naturally.

• Good sleep is important for pain control. Poor sleep can increase inflammation and make pain feel worse.

Try This This Week

This week, do a simple “joint protection check.”

Pick one painful or stiff joint and ask yourself:

• Am I moving it every day?
• Am I sitting too long without getting up?
• Could I improve my posture or body mechanics?
• Am I relying on pain medicine more often than I realize?
• Have I tried heat, stretching, or strengthening exercises consistently?

Then choose ONE small action this week:
Take a 10-minute walk after dinner, do chair stands while watching TV, try a heating pad in the morning, or replace one sitting session with gentle movement.

Small daily habits often help joints more than occasional big efforts.

Your future knees will thank you.
