Helping adults over 50 stay strong, mobile, and independent

Welcome to The Exercise Doc Family!

Hello everyone,

This week we are talking about one of the most powerful medicines we have for protecting our heart.

The amazing thing? You don’t need a prescription for it.

It’s exercise.

Heart disease remains one of the biggest health challenges we face as we get older, but the good news is we have more control than many people realize. The choices we make every day — especially how we move our bodies — can dramatically influence how we age.

In today’s newsletter, we’ll discuss the best exercises to help prevent heart disease after 50.

Many people think protecting their heart just means walking more. Walking is wonderful, but a complete heart-healthy program includes aerobic exercise, strength training, balance, mobility, and building the type of fitness that allows you to enjoy life for decades.

Because the goal isn’t just living longer. The goal is living better.

Being able to travel. Play with your grandchildren. Carry your groceries. Climb stairs. Enjoy retirement. Stay independent.

For our Exercise of the Week, we’ll explore the Japanese Walking Method — a simple approach that alternates faster walking intervals with slower recovery periods. Research suggests this style of walking can be a great way to challenge your heart, improve fitness, and add variety to your routine.

No complicated equipment. No extreme workouts. Just smarter movement.

And if you are wondering, “Where do I start?” or “Am I doing the right exercises for my age?” — that is exactly why I created The Doctor’s Guide to Exercise After 50.

Inside the guide, I walk you through how to build a complete exercise program designed for healthy aging — including strength, cardio, mobility, balance, recovery, and how to exercise safely and effectively as the years go by.

Think of it as your roadmap to staying strong, active, and independent.

Remember, you don’t have to change everything overnight.

Small steps, repeated consistently, can change the direction of your health.

Your heart doesn’t need perfection.

It just needs you to start.

Keep moving,

Exercise of the Week: Japanese Walking Method

Walking has always been one of the best exercises for adults over 50, but a simple variation known as the Japanese Walking Method has recently gained attention because it can provide many of the benefits of a much longer walk in less time.

💙 Quick Health Wins

❤️ Your heart loves consistency more than intensity
You don’t have to train like an athlete to improve your heart health. A daily walk, a few strength exercises, or simply reducing the amount of time you spend sitting can all add up. Small actions repeated over years create powerful results.

💪 Strong muscles support a stronger heart
Strength training isn’t just about bigger muscles. Building and maintaining muscle after 50 helps improve blood sugar control, metabolism, balance, and your ability to stay active — all important pieces of protecting your heart.

🚶 Pick up the pace occasionally
Your heart gets stronger when you safely challenge it. Adding short periods where you walk a little faster — like the Japanese Walking Method — can help improve your fitness without spending hours exercising

Try This This Week

Take the “3-Minute Challenge”

During one of your walks this week, try this:

🚶 Walk at your normal comfortable pace for 3 minutes.
⚡ Then increase your speed for 3 minutes — enough that you notice your breathing increase, but you can still talk in short sentences.
🔁 Repeat this pattern 3–5 times.

That’s it.

You just turned an ordinary walk into a heart-strengthening workout.

Remember — improvement happens when we gently ask our body to do a little more than it did yesterday.

Challenge yourself, stay consistent, and keep moving.
