Not All Creatine is Created Equal

For many adults over 50, creatine has gone from being a supplement for bodybuilders to one of the most researched supplements for healthy aging.

Studies suggest it may help support muscle strength, preserve lean muscle, improve exercise performance, and even support brain health. That is why I have been recommending creatine to many of my patients and why I personally take it every day.

But here’s something most people never think about:

Not all creatine is the same.

When you take a supplement every single day for years, quality becomes just as important as the ingredient itself.

Let’s look at why.

The Problem With Assuming Every Supplement Is Equal

If two containers both say “creatine monohydrate,” it’s easy to assume they are identical. They aren’t.

Think about buying olive oil or coffee. Two bottles may have the same name on the label, but the quality of the ingredients, how they were made, and how carefully they were tested can be very different.

The same is true for supplements. Manufacturing standards, purity, and quality testing can vary widely from one company to another. Since creatine is often taken every day for months or years, those differences deserve attention.

One of the biggest differences between creatine products is how they are manufactured.

You may have heard about PFAS, sometimes called “forever chemicals.”

These chemicals have been used in many industrial and consumer products because they resist heat, grease, and water.

Researchers continue to study the long-term health effects of PFAS exposure.

While PFAS are found throughout our environment, many companies are now expanding their testing programs to help ensure their products remain as clean as possible.

As consumers, it is reasonable to look for companies that take these concerns seriously.

What About Microplastics?

Microplastics have become another growing concern. Tiny plastic particles have been detected in our air, water, food supply, and even human tissues.

Scientists are still learning exactly what long-term exposure means for our health.

Although no one can completely avoid environmental exposure, choosing manufacturers that emphasize purity and rigorous testing may help reduce unnecessary exposure from supplements.

Why Third-Party Testing Matters

One of the best ways to judge a supplement isn’t by the marketing on the label. It’s by independent testing. Third-party testing means an outside organization evaluates the product to verify that what’s on the label matches what’s inside the container.

That extra layer of accountability gives consumers greater confidence.

It also helps ensure consistency from one batch to the next.

Six-Stage Quality Testing

Some manufacturers now use multiple testing steps throughout the production process rather than testing only the finished product.

This can include evaluating:

  • Raw ingredients

  • Ingredient identity

  • Purity

  • Manufacturing quality

  • Finished product

  • Final verification before distribution

Testing at multiple stages helps identify problems before products ever reach consumers.

For supplements intended for daily use, that level of oversight is reassuring.

Why NSF Certified for Sport Matters

You may have seen the NSF Certified for Sport® logo on certain supplements.

Many people assume this certification is only important for professional athletes. Actually, it benefits everyone.

NSF Certified for Sport means products have been independently tested to help verify:

  • Ingredients listed on the label are present

  • Products are screened for many banned athletic substances

Even if you never compete in sports, independent certification provides another measure of confidence in the product you’re using.

Micronized Creatine: Easier to Mix

Another feature worth considering is micronized creatine. Micronized simply means the powder has been processed into much smaller particles.

Also consider:

How Much Protein Do You Really Need After 50?

If you asked ten people how much protein they should eat each day, you'd probably get ten different answers.

Some people still believe the old advice that a little protein at dinner is enough. Others think everyone needs to drink multiple protein shakes every day.

The truth is somewhere in the middle.

As we get older, protein becomes one of the most important nutrients we can eat. It helps preserve muscle, supports bone health, improves recovery after exercise, and may even help us stay independent as we age.

Yet many adults over 50 simply don't get enough.

Let's talk about how much protein you really need—and how to get it without making nutrition complicated.

Why Protein Becomes More Important After 50

Beginning around age 30, we slowly start to lose muscle. After age 50, that loss often speeds up.

Without regular strength training and adequate protein, adults can lose 3% to 8% of their muscle mass each decade, with the rate increasing as we get older.

This condition, called sarcopenia, isn't just about looking smaller.

It can lead to:

  • Weakness

  • Poor balance

  • Slower walking speed

  • Difficulty climbing stairs

  • More falls

  • Loss of independence

Fortunately, this process is not inevitable. One of the best ways to fight muscle loss is combining resistance exercise with enough high-quality protein.

Why Older Adults Need More Protein

Here's something many people don't realize.

As we age, our muscles become less sensitive to protein. Researchers call this anabolic resistance.

In simple terms, your muscles don't respond as efficiently to protein as they did when you were younger.

That means you generally need more protein to stimulate muscle repair and growth.

This is one reason nutrition recommendations for healthy aging often exceed the minimum daily allowance.

So How Much Protein Do You Need?

The Recommended Dietary Allowance (RDA) for adults is 0.8 grams of protein per kilogram of body weight each day.

However, many experts believe this amount is simply the minimum needed to prevent deficiency—not the amount that supports healthy aging.

For most healthy adults over 50, a practical goal is:

1.0–1.2 grams of protein per kilogram of body weight each day.

If you regularly perform strength training or are recovering from illness, surgery, or injury, your needs may increase to 1.2–1.6 grams per kilogram, depending on your individual situation.

Here's a simple example:

A person weighing 170 pounds (77 kilograms) should aim for approximately:

  • Minimum: about 60 grams/day (RDA)

  • Healthy aging target: about 75–95 grams/day

  • Active older adult: about 95–120 grams/day

These numbers are general guidelines. Certain medical conditions, especially advanced kidney disease, may require individualized recommendations from your healthcare provider.

It's Not Just How Much—It's When

Many people eat very little protein during the day and then consume most of it at dinner.

For example:

Breakfast: 8 grams

Lunch: 15 grams

Dinner: 55 grams

Your body may not use that pattern as efficiently.

Instead, aim to spread your protein throughout the day.

A good target is 25 to 35 grams of protein at each meal.

This appears to stimulate muscle protein synthesis more effectively than saving nearly all of your protein for one large evening meal.

The Best Sources of Protein

Whole foods should be your first choice whenever possible.

Excellent options include:

  • Chicken

  • Turkey

  • Fish

  • Lean beef

  • Eggs

  • Greek yogurt

  • Cottage cheese

  • Milk

  • Tofu

  • Tempeh

  • Edamame

  • Beans and lentils

  • Nuts and seeds

Eating a variety of protein sources also provides important vitamins, minerals, and healthy fats.

Do You Need a Protein Powder?

Not necessarily. If you can consistently meet your protein goals through food, that's wonderful.

But many adults over 50 struggle to eat enough protein every day.

Maybe you aren't very hungry at breakfast. Maybe you're busy. Maybe you're trying to lose weight.

In those situations, a high-quality protein powder can make reaching your daily goal much easier.

Mixing protein into a smoothie, oatmeal, or yogurt can add 20–30 grams of protein in just a few minutes.

Think of protein powder as a convenient tool—not a replacement for healthy eating.

Whey vs. Plant Protein

One question I hear often is: "Which protein is better?"

Both whey and plant-based proteins can support muscle health.

Whey protein contains all nine essential amino acids and is naturally rich in leucine, an amino acid that plays a key role in stimulating muscle protein synthesis.

Many studies have shown whey to be highly effective for building and maintaining muscle.

Plant-based proteins can also be excellent choices, especially when they contain a blend of complementary protein sources to provide a complete amino acid profile.

The best choice is the one that fits your health needs, dietary preferences, and lifestyle.

Should You Take Protein Right After Exercise?

You don't have to sprint to the kitchen the moment you finish exercising.

The old idea of a tiny "anabolic window" has largely been replaced by a broader understanding.

Eating protein within a couple of hours after resistance exercise is generally a practical approach and can help support muscle recovery.

The most important factor is meeting your total daily protein needs consistently.

Common Protein Mistakes

Here are several mistakes I see frequently:

Skipping breakfast

Many breakfasts contain very little protein.

Waiting until dinner

Try to spread protein throughout the day.

Not eating enough after strength training

Exercise and protein work together.

Choosing convenience foods instead of protein-rich foods

Planning ahead helps.

Assuming aging means muscle loss is unavoidable

It isn't.

With regular strength training, adequate protein, and consistency, adults in their 60s, 70s, 80s, and beyond can still build strength and improve muscle function.

The Bottom Line

Protein is far more than a nutrient for athletes. After age 50, it becomes one of the building blocks of healthy aging.

Combined with regular strength training, enough protein can help you:

  • Preserve muscle

  • Stay stronger

  • Improve balance

  • Recover faster

  • Maintain independence

  • Continue doing the activities you enjoy

You don't have to count every gram forever.

Start by including a quality protein source at each meal, aim to spread your intake throughout the day, and combine it with regular exercise.

Small changes repeated consistently often produce the biggest results.
